What are you starting with as far as a headboard? Is it tufted, wood, has doors and shelves, plastic, attached to a bed or a wall? Need more information to help you, a picture would be good.
If it is timber you can stain it or paint it or decoupage or use Pyrography to decorate it. You could also, Panel it or use Wallpaper and paint to effect a nice change, or use fabric and piping.
If Padded, you could paint it with chalk paint or recover it or use aplique. You could recover it from scratch or go over it with curtaining or blanket etc. If buttoned, you might like to paint just the buttons gold/silver or mixed colours just to make a change.
Another idea would be to use it as the back of a bench for indoor as an ottoman or outside.
