Hello William,
I would use a wire brush to remove the rust, then Prime and paint with Stove paint. A mucky job, but it looks as if it has to be done and boy, won't it be great when it's done..........

I used steel wool, a wire brush if needed, and then Williams Stove Black and polish that is graphite which is the best maintenance product for cast iron stoves/airtights. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=williams+stove+black+and+polish&crid=1VWB556LUZPTD&sprefix=williams+stove%2Cfashion%2C559&ref=nb_sb_ss_i_3_14

Hi William. Make a paste with lemon juice and salt. Put it on the rust and wait 24 hrs. Then wipe it up. Sand if required.
