Nancy....I have used mine for several different things...in sewing room, magazines, coloring books and colors, etc. Works great but can also paint, however, I love the snow scenes, Minnie and Mickey soooo....just leave as is. Good luck
paint might chip. what about wrapping it in contact paper?

Nancy: maybe this will help
Popcorn cans can be used to contain cleaning products for the car. Everything in one place. Or you could decorate one and use it as an ice bucket.
Here's a cool idea
I use mine to store sharp tools like tall pruners, hand saws, some garden tools. It protects the blades and prevents anyone getting poked or cut by accident.
I store dog food in mine, I also use mine as a cookie container, flour and sugar container.
Look at this cute trash can someone made from a popcorn tin. https://www.hometalk.com/19897883/popcorn-tin-trash-can
You could turn it into a reusuable gift container like I did with cookie tins here: https://happydealhappyday.com/cookie-tins/
Here is what I did with mine... https://www.homeroad.net/2018/01/recycled-dry-dog-food-container.html
