The clematis we will be pruning today are in the category 2 for pruning. If you need more info on Clematis pruning categories this post will help: How to Grow Clematis Successfully.
Clematis have been called the Queen of Vines and I can understand why. But pruning clematis can stump many. Today I focus on Clematis that are in Category 2 for pruning because that is what is most readily available in most garden centers and what most people have.
On this Clematis you can see the numerous new buds and lots of old growth. We are going clean this clematis up to make it look better.
When your Clematis is budding out it is a good time to give it a good Spring prune.(note: this method is one way to prune your Group 2 Clematis for another please see the video)
Trim dead and crispy stems back to a new bud. This helps put the energy into new growth and neatens up the plant.
Cut right back to the bud, that includes the side shoots that may be entwined with the trellis.

Once you are doing trimmed back the old growth your clematis may look a little naked but don't worry, it will fill back in quickly and beautifully. Note: I mentioned this earlier, this is one way to Spring prune your clematis for another method please see video, about halfway through I share the second easy way.

Be sure to visit the blog post for more information on Growing and propagating Clematis in your garden.
In this video I show you both methods of Pruning Group 2 Clematis and I show you a few weeks later what they both look like compared to each other.

I have 2 clematis that I inherited when we bought our current home a couple of years ago. I had no idea to prune them like this. Is it too late to prune? It's early July, northeast Arkansas. Please help!

I am sorry you are struggling. What kind of climate are you in? There are so many variables that it is rather hard to troubleshoot for you.
