Hi Cynthia. I'm a Cynthia too. You could hang a platform bed from the ceiling. What boy (or girl) wouldn't like that? Use a stud finder to locate the studs to hang the bed from.
I would choose a theme of something that he really likes but will grow with him as he matures. Then paint or stain the bed in a finish that will be versatile with that and decorate the room with accent pieces of his hobby or passion.
I did my son's room with vintage car accents and used cherry wood stain when he was a teen. I actually kept it after he moved out for about 5 years. Even after his sister took over the room as a sewing room. We just removed the accent pieces, he took with him when he moved, and didn't have to re paint the room. Now it's a guest room for when they visit, same color scheme just new bed & bedding.
