Rit dye is for regular fabric. You would need to use Rit Dyemore.

If I am understanding this correctly you were told you could not dye your comforter because it is polyester? Rit has a post on how to dye synthetic fibers. Poly is a synthetic fiber. I hope this helps. https://www.ritdye.com/instructions/how-to-use-dyemore-for-synthetic-fibers/
If you have thread, you could always do some embroidery on it to help change the color. It wouldn't re-dye the whole thing, but it would add a bit of color. Or you could add applique pieces from old clothes and scraps you have around the house.
