Vicki: maybe this will help. (or you could go to a furniture resale store and buy an armoire.
You can build an armoire. Many old homes in Europe and other parts of the world do not contain built in closets like we have here. Check out these options.
I'm not sure if you currently have a closet and want to add to it or not. But here is some inspiration that would help you. https://www.hometalk.com/2904673/how-a-girl-built-her-closet
If you do not want to go to the trouble of building an armoire, go to the Salvation Army. I saw several armoires there priced range from $79-$100 and they were all in decent shape. Ikea also has some nice ones with instructions
We opted for adding closet space with furniture. When you say "free standing", I wonder if you mean completely unattached. You can build something similar to a clothesline on wheels by using moving dollies. I would check marketplace and thrift stores for an old tv cabinet that you can convert. I see them given away in our area quite often. My daughter did that and loves it.

Here is a nice tutorial for you: https://www.hunker.com/13402419/how-to-build-a-free-standing-closet
Have you looked into IKEA cabinets and closets? Or an old hutch with a bar to hang clothes.
A free standing closet is called an armoire, a wardrobe, a chiffarobe.... or the new storage solutions are made of pipe and canvas to expand a closet.... https://www.walmart.com/search/?query=closet%20storage%20and%20organizer&typeahead=closet%20storage
For a nice piece I would check on Wayfair.com
