ruthie...You can start in egg cartons and is very simple. Google and take a look. It's fun and can involve kids and grandkids too.
I start germinating the seeds in damp paper towel, make sure the paper towel is damp daily. When the seeds starts sprouting I transplant in a small pot.
Hi Ruthie. I live in Illinois and we start our garden around Mother's Day. It's important to wait until after the last frost. Plant your seeds 2 to 3 feet apart. Put a tomato cage right over it. The cage will be used to support the weight of the tomatoes. Pick them when they turn red.

Hi Ruthie, we just put the slice of tomato on top of soil in a small pot or container, cover it up with about an inch of soil and pat down lightly. Place a shower cap over the pot for about a week and you'll see the little seedling start growing.
This totally amazed me! We bought some Roma tomatoes at the local organic market and forgot about them, they were left in the plastic bag for about 10 days. They were found and looked just fine so we were going to slice and have them with dinner. When I cut into them, there were lots and lots of new seedlings that had sprouted. I took them out very carefully and planted them in a pot with dirt, now we have about 20 new plants.
Best to you.

There are lots of posts here on growing tomatoes:

Valuable information can be found on your seed packet. It will tell you how to plant how deep to plant and went to move outdoors once your frost threat has expired. Many times seeds are planted indoors with controlled conditions - grow lights and then moved outside once the weather is more hospitable.
