Can I caulk over existing tiles?

After a deep clean in my newly moved in master bathroom tile floor, some of the caulking was discolored. (almost like they painted over the caulk with white paint). It is not mold, just discolored. Is it ok to do a fresh coat of caulk over the existing tile to freshen it up? All the tiles are in great shape.

  • Some people will say 'no', but if the caulk is clean and dry, you should be OK.

    Hi Tinna,

I agree with Ann. The reason some will say no is that the old grout could loosen and then you'll have to redo it. The issue to think about is why would they paint over the existing grout? Is there mold under the paint that can eat away at the existing grout? I think you should examine it closely before you decide your course of action. If all of the grout is firmly in places, it should be okay. If any of it is loose, it's best to cut it out and start fresh with new grout. Wishing you the best.

Hi Tinna, do you mean grout between your floor tiles? Here's some instructions on how to redo the grout.

    Hello Tinna,

If you want to re grout, you should remove the existing with a Dremel Drill and then re-do. You could cheat by repainting them...

For a quick fix that won't last forever, they do make paint pens to refresh or change the color if grout. That's probably what they used. You can do the same thing if the grout is in good shape. If you really want to put new grout in, you will need to remove the old stuff. Grout comes in lots of colors, now, so take that into account, too.

Maepi makes a product called Grout Refresh. It comes in 30+ colors, Amazon sells it but Floor and Decor has it for 1/2 of what Amazon sells it for. It has a sealer in it so it will not mold. This stuff is great, I used it on 2 bathrooms several years ago and it still looks brand new. It is an easy job but it does take time. Follow the instructions on the bottle. A bottle goes a long way. BTW a bottle cost around $15
