This is one thing we'd never do ourselves! It's really tricky. It's not that expensive to have it installed and is worth it.
Wall to wall carpet is a job for pros, if you want stretched carpet over pad.
it requires a lot of strength to manhandle the huge piece of carpet, after you cut it approximately to length.
The knee kicker is also a physical work out, as well as technical.
Direct glue & staples are something you could do, with some planning. Some direct glue carpets come with pad attached to the back.
