Hi! From prior experience, I knew that soft surfaces, such as heavy curtains work, but, I learned even more from this article. Hope it helps!

There are two components to “sound proofing” a room:

    Sound Transmission STC

    Sound Absorption SAC

If for example, you want to play your drum kit in the house, you need a high STC. I would buy Homosote panels and line the walls & even prop one over the window.

Homosote makes many many kinds of panels & sound attenuation system. They will teach you different methods on how to install them, if you dig around on their website. They are the manufacturer, not the retailer.

I would look at both their website & what you can find at your local DIY store, or a contractors supply store.

My local Menards carries some affordable & high quality Homosote panels.

It will depend on if you are wanting to truly sound proof the room or you want to reduce the noise. It is rather expensive to truly sound proof and would involve quite a bit of work. If you want to reduce the noise, you can add panels or sound absorbing materials to the interior of the room, Items that help are furniture upholstered in something other than leather, rugs, heavy drapes, wall hanging that are cloth or decorative rugs.

Building out the walls and using foam board insulation then 5/8" drywall. Carpet squares on walls will deaden sound transmission. Egg crate foam taped or stapled to walls and ceiling will absorb sound.

My hubby hung heavy blankets on the wall and ceiling. He is a musician and I don't want to hear his practices. LOL

Insulate with sound attenuating insulation. It is sold next to the pink stuff and is slightly more expensive. It fits into the stud bays like any other insulation.

Fabric is a great way to help with sound. You can put up window treatments/curtains or hang it on the walls like a tapestry.

Hanging rugs on the walls will help sound proof a room. You might be able to buy remnants from local home improvement stores.

Foam from a fabric store. You could do some liquid nails or a staple gun (depending on thickness of the foam/length of staples) to attach it.

Bookcases full of books also works great. I use that technique when designing homes.

I have a small house, which in the future I plan to convert into a small studio for my new group. To make this place really suitable for us, we decided to do some landscaping. Friends have already ordered soundproofing of walls and stands for special equipment. I am thinking to demolish one wall to increase the volume of the common room and connect it to the kitchen. I hope we will succeed because our intentions to become one of the best in our country are serious. I hope that by the summer season we will have time to finish everything, as we are planning to organize the first concert in the fall, we already have several songs ready for the album. Good luck to us!
