Hi Bridget, I'd love to help, but I'm not sure what a flower bind is. Could you describe it in a little more detail and I'll give you some ideas?

Hi Bridget, a flower bed can be really improved with a pretty mulch and some perennials (such as peonies or hydrangeas) that bloom year after year and are low maintenance.

If you don't want to plant flowers in them, you could go with vegetables, a fairy garden, succulents, or landscape art such as statues or water fountain.

If you are trying to dress up a flower bed, I save a lot of money by buying clearance plants. These usually require a little extra TLC when you get them home, but will flourish within a few days.

    Hello.

    Where are you located?

That would determine the best flowering plant to suggest. Most plants success depend on their hardness to geographic planting zones presenting weather conditions. Shade or sun, what is your soil like?

This information could give us more clue to give you the best suggestions for plant success!

Additionally for the best local professional advice

I would highly suggest contacting your cooperative extension. These offices are manned by volunteer master gardeners on site there waiting to answer the communities questions that know your local situation quite well.

Master gardeners are required to volunteer back designated hours ( plus continuing education) each year to maintain MG certification -this community outreach and education is their goal.

    Hi Bridget,

I think the best advise is to go to your local nursery or landscaper and look at what is available in your area. When you plant native plants they do a lot better than other plants. Also measure your area and pay attention to the grown plant size. The fun part can be getting pieces of plants from neighbors/friends/family and starting your garden with them. I once got 1 small piece of a hosta from a neighbor. Over the years, I've turned that one piece into over 50 plants and I've also given some away. Every year, I'd cut off a piece of the plant in the spring and plant it somewhere else. By the next summer I could take a piece off that plant too. You just want to be careful that you don't get pieces of plants that will overtake your garden. I hope this helps you to save money while filling your garden bed. Wishing you the best.

I would go to local nursery to get an idea so it will work in your place

Do you have a picture you could share?

Do you mean flower bed? Petunias are very hardy and spread nicely!

  • I seek out free materials and then plant inexpensive plants. Check with friends or neighbors, see if they have any plants they'd be willing to split, then in the future, give back to them.
