How should I clean and paint these furniture feet?

***UPDATE** Also how do I clean them? I would rather leave then on and save the time but I want it to look good so I'll do whatever will work best. Should I take them off and put them in boiling water? I added pictures that show the corrosion. ***I've already asked a few things about this nightstand and everyone had been so helpful. Thank you. I bought a gold rub n buff for the accent prices and will do the feet as well. Would you take the feet off to clean and apply rub n buff or leave them on? Also should I do it before or after I paint. Whoops forgot the pictures the first time

  • Rub n Buff is usually used after painting, and without seeing your nightstand, I'd say leave the feet on.

Hi ! Can you post a picture ? If they come off easily , then I would probably do it that way . Usually the gold accent finish , is done as a finishing touch , so it would be done after you have painted the piece .

Hello Leanne! If you can take the feet off easily you can take them off. You can also leave them on. You may want to put your nightstand upside down on a table so you can really see what you are doing. I do remember seeing your posts about this nightstand! You could post another picture to this question to refresh our memories!

Hi Leanne, I don't see a picture if that is what you are referring to. But regardless it sounds like you are talking about doing a separate thing to the feet than you are to the nightstand anyway. I would remove them if it is easy so you don't have to tape them off when you paint the entire piece. It is much easier to do the feet separate if you are applying a totally different finish. If you are painting the feet as well, then I would paint them the color you want them and then apply the rub n buff afterwards. I think the rub n buff is more for accent! Good luck. Post a pic! would love to see it.

Either way works. If they screw off easily then take them off before you paint. It is much easier to not have to tape off or cover. Since there is no picture attached it is hard to tell what they look like. If you leave on you just tape off adjoining area with painters tape.

If you feel you can remove and replace easily without any issues, I would go that route. If not then leave on and tape them with frog tape all over while you paint the piece. The do the feet last once the piece is 100% dry.

  • I'm a lazy painter, so I'd leave them on. Just carefully cover any areas nearby that might get paint on them.

Since you think they legs are copper or brass, I’d first start with cleaning them with either ketchup or lemon & salt, or vinegar. Anything acidic will brighten the finish, then see if you like the look before deciding to paint. If paint is your choice, I’d definitely use a spray by Rustoleum. I believe there are many metallics that would look beautiful, even the Rose Quartz with the slightly pink cast would be pretty. I’d probably be lazy and mask off the areas you don’t want painted or over-sprayed rather than remove the legs.

    Hi Leanne:

I would take them off, but be careful you do not strip the screws. Have some wood filler on hand if the holes for the screws get too wide. I would take a green scrubbie and clean everything down. You could try vinegar and salt to clean the copper. If you like the results, great, but if not get some copper Rustoleum paint and spray paint the legs. If you want to do the lip of the leg with rub and buff do that after you spray paint / clean the leg.

Please post pictures when you are done, I would love to see how this beautiful nightstand comes out.
