How can I make over badly scratched laminate furniture?
Would like to refinish badly scratched laminate or veneer (not sure which) furniture. Can it be stained or only painted. Right now it is oak colored. Thanks.

How to Paint Laminate Furniture
You can stain wood veneer and paint either veneer or laminate. I'm working on an old laminate dresser right now, trying out some different methods. Prep is super important no matter what you are working on. You want to clean dust, grime and wax off before doing anything else. Krudkutter takes off most anything with a little elbow grease. Microfiber cloths are your friend. If there is any gloss or shine to the finish you want to lightly sand and/or strip the finish to remove that shine. A sealer like Kilz will keep the old finish from bleeding through your new paint. Then, use a clear, water based polyurethane sealer to protect it. If you want to stain wood, you want to have the wood finish removed down to bare wood to get good absorption. Since wood veneer is trickier to sand, I would probably use a gel stain. It's more opaque, but doesn't have to soak into the wood as much. It sits more on the surface. Wipe it off as you're applying so you don't have sticky pigment residue to remove. Hope that helps!
Watching videos and reading tutorials always help me get started. Make sure you have the right tools for what you want to do. It really is fun to do!

Depending on what finish it is, you an try to stain it. You might start with a project like Old English Scratch Cover or Rejuvenate.
Barb: ABSOLUTELY you can paint it! I cleaned, then put on a coat of good primer, followed by two coats of a good latex semi-gloss! ...it lasts for years!! (Treat gently for a month or so -- to let the paint cure.)
Here's a photo of my kitchen:
Thanks so much for sharing. Anxious to start
What's great about laminates is you can treat them like wood in the sense that you can fill all the scratches with wood putty and lightly sand with fine grit to get an absolutely smooth finish. After that a good primer and paint in any color you like! I would also put a couple of coats of sealant on it as well my fav is polycrilic.
Chalk paint will for sure work on any surfaces and no sanding needed
Laminate and veneer are two different things so you'll need to determine exactly which it is first. Veneer can be sanded and re-stained while laminate will be a much different process.
