Can you give us some more information Mona. Is your porch screened in? Can you cover the screen with sheets of plastic to keep out snow and rain? Or is your porch just a roof and columns open to the weather? You can cover your furniture with plastic or tarps to keep the weather away. Or are you wanting to enclose your porch for winter use?

You can do the plastic that can be purchased at hardware stores...works good.

If there are removable cushions, pull them off and put inside.

Cover with furniture covers. If you can't find them, you can customize with either a tarp or a good thick plastic that comes on rolls. Make sure to anchor the covers so wind doesn't blow them off.

If you have rain or snow, periodically remove the accumulation from the covers so they will last longer.

If you want to do the entire structure, you can hang plastic from the roof of the porch and drape with an extra foot at the bottom. Secure with pressure treated 2x4s at the bottom.

If you can store your furniture out of the weather it would be good. If not at least store the cushions. Make sure if wood or wicker it has a weather proof finish. You can also use plastic tarps for protection. Spring will be here before we know it.

Our neighbour has the same problem - she brings the cushions inside (protects from rodents too!) and then securely wraps the furniture with tarps. It all still looks like new - and years later!

  • I usually bring the furniture into the garage and hang it from the ceiling but you can purchase furniture covers quite easily.

I don't have room to store furniture indoors, so I have waterproof covers I put on the furniture and have the cushions hanging from hooks in the basement.

I take the cushions off and store in garage. I put plastic around the bases to keep the rain off.

I would cover them when not in use and/or seal them with a protective sealer.

You might consider using patio furniture cover or bringing inside upholstered cushions to extend longevity.

What types of materials is the furniture made out of?

Are the pieces rated for exterior use?

    Hello Mona,

Maybe use a tarpaulin to cover in bad weather. If timber and stained then use

Yacht Varnish. If painted use a good external Gloss paint. For cushions, either remove inside in bad weather or place in waterproof store, or spray them with Waterproofer at beginning of season. Best wishes.......

Have you thought about covering them with furniture covers that are designed for the weather.
