Depending on the depth of the drawer and size of the pet, you can either remove or cut down one side for access then add an upholstered cushion the size of the drawer. You can remove the hardware or leave, depending on how you want it to look. Add felt to the bottom so that it doesn't scuff flooring. You can also add non slip padding.
Ronnie...l would sand any rough areas then paint. Place an old pillow in the drawer or fill a pillowcase and sew clothes

A simple was is to add small block of wood to the base for legs. Paint the drawers and add some cushions.
