Can I install live wood over an ugly tile kitchen countertop?

Hi Linda I don't see why not! As long as those tiles/countertop are in good shape and provide a good solid foundation to put your butcher block over I say GO FOR IT! Ikea actually sells some pretty inexpensive butcher block you could use for the top, after that I would head to a local lumber yard for a live edge you could tack to the side of it.

I don't see any reason why you cannot put wood over the tile but it will add a bit of thickness to them so I would take them into consideration. If there's no conflict, you should be fine.

I did a little research and it is not recommended to put over tiles. If your countertop were smooth with no grout it could be done. I would take a scraper and chisel and take off all the tiles. It should not take too long. You will be left with a smooth top to install your butcher block.

You likely can do so but be aware this is going to change your working height and it may prove uncomfortable. Test out the difference in height with a piece of scrap the same thickness.

I would honestly remove the entire existing countertop and replace it with the wood slab. Putting it over the tiles will raise the height too much. We just installed a wooden countertop and just popped it on top of the cabinets directly.

HI Linda, you can Install over existing countertops for ease of installation. Tile and natural stone, as well as other laminate surfaces, can serve as an adequate base for your laminate tiles. As long as the surface is flat, solid and well-mounted, you can go right over the top. But i

Is some of the tile countertop that you want to cover surrounding the sink?

If so, then it will not be possible to simply put any additional counter top over it without adversely affecting the sink mounting.

If you really do like the look of wooden countertops, then one option that is considerably more 'budget friendly' that purchasing live edge slabs is to go the route of laminate that looks like real wood.

You could always ask one or two Carpenter/Builders to give you a price to do it, so you will have the satisfaction of knowing How much it would have cost and How long it will have taken for someone else to have done it for you. You could be pleasantly enlightened!
