How can I make over this table?

You could use chalk paint and then distress. Then the chips would not matter as it would become part of the more rustic distressed look.

Repair the chips with Durham's wood putty, sand with either fine steel wool or very fine sandpaper, clean with denatured alcohol, then prime & paint.

I have had success with using Homer Formby's Furniture Refinisher. It blends the finish together and helps hide the chips. Try a little mayo on the water stain on the top first. If you don't want to keep the wood finish, fill any chips with wood putty and let it dry. Fine sand the whole table and then prime & paint it.

Would you consider using chalk paint?

I favor the Rustoleum products, their products and support are fabulous. Perhaps it might be available in a color —that you like?

If you want to keep stained wood and not paint it, I would suggest stripping and sanding it. If you use wood putty to even out rough spots (if the sanding didn't even it out), be sure to get putty that either matches your stain or mix a small amount of the putty with a small amount of your stain in a small container before patching, because otherwise your repairs won't blend in.

Yes sand that all down. I don't see any peeling veneer so the chipping problems might just be addressed with a good sanding. Start with 180 and work your way up to 220. Then decide whether you want to paint or stain. A great paint that doesn't chip is a cabinet paint....Benjamin Moore advance. Love that paint. Use a primer first. It doesn't need a topcoat. Wipes clean when dirty. expensive but worth every penny!

You could try using Mayonnaise to remove the ring mark. Sharpie pen to colour in the knocks. Then go over with Beeswax if you don't want to go to the trouble of rubbing down,. It could be a quick fix. Best of luck!

Depending on your decor and if it fits in, I can envision the table(s) being painted a black shiny enamel.

Painting is the easiest way, but if you want a beautiful natural finish, fill in the knicks with a sharpie or wood filler that matches. Beeswax then to the final product.

If this fails, paint.
