I love coasters. In the summer the protect my furniture from condensation from icy drink and in the winter they protect from the heat of hot mugs of tea. There are a lot of really cool and fancy coaster sewing tutorials, but this project is so simple that even the absolute beginner sewist can make it! You could even make a version of these without sewing a single stitch!

Materials for six coasters

  • three 9″ x 12″ sheets of felticon , two in one color and the third in a contrasting color
  • thread to match the main color of felt
  • sewing needle
  • fabric scissors
  • (or just felt, scissors and glue if doing a no-sew version)

Cut twelve 4 1/2″ squares in your main color (for me, red), and six in your contrast color (for me, green). Stack them in groups of three, with the contrast color between the main color, and pin them together.

Draw a square or circle in the center of the top layer making sure to leave at least 3/4" between the shape and the fabric edges.

Sew around the drawn shape, about 4 mm outside of the lines (above on the left). Then sew another time 1 cm from the outside edges (above on the right).

If you want to avoid sewing, simply glue the layers together between the pen line and the fabric edges, but don't get too close to either!

Pinch the top layer of the felt so that you can make a cut in the center ONLY IN THE TOP LAYER. Then stick the scissors inside the hole and cut out the center of the top layer just outside the pen lines so that they get trimmed off.

For a really cool finish that shows off the contrast color on the edges, trim around the edges with zig zag pinking shears!

Now make a set in all different colors! These coasters are Christmas-themed, but why not make spring and summer ones, too?

These coasters are great for protecting your furniture, but they're also a great gift!
