Ductless air conditioners work the same way as regular HVAC air conditioners, however, they don't have ducts leading to separate/different rooms. It is a one unit pr one room system. The units usually are wall-mounted, with the temperature control switch on the unit itself, mounted on the wall, or operated with a remote control. The units are hard-wired to run on electricity.
The advantage of using ductless air conditioners vrs an HVAC system are:
-you can cool one room at a time (only the room that you are using)
-there is no need to access the attic for installation
-less expensive to install and operate, and often more quiet also, as a smaller amount of air is being moved at any one time when the unit is on.
Hi! Hope this helps answer your question:

If you are thinking about getting a ductless minisplit system I just wanted to give you some things to think about. We have 2 in our house. What I love about it is that it is great for zoning your heat/air conditioning. In those 2 separate rooms that we have the system, the forced air throughout the house would not be able to reach those areas well with just leaving doors open. The mini split allows us to be totally comfortable in our 4 season sunroom all year long. The only issue is that when they do need a tune up or something needs to be fixed, it will cost you. We just spent $1000 to get it serviced with refrigerant added since there was a possible leak. The other thing is that the company we use to service our large HVAC system doesn't deal with the mini splits. So we had to find and entirely different company to work on those systems in our house. That being said...I do love the mini splits. Just throwing out some first hand pros and cons for you that might not be in the above articles.
If you are referencing a mini split unit, they are basically on the same principle as a window air unit. Think motel units. It is forced air that distributes in an open area. They need to be centrally located. When my attic unit went out I considered it but went with a window heat and ac unit for $700 and use 2ceiling fans to help circulate.

Hello. We installed a mini split in our family room. Our traditional heat pump was not able to cool the room because of the lack of insulation in the log walls and roofing.

Hi David, Ductless ACs (also called “mini-split ACs”) work the same way a central air conditioner works—just without the ducts. You see, ductless ACs and central ACs produce cool air exactly the same way: they suck in warm air from your home, absorb the heat and moisture from that air, then dump the heat/moisture outside.

I found this post that explains it. https://mspplumbingheatingair.com/blog/how-does-ductless-air-conditioning-work#:~:text=Ductless%20ACs%20(also%20called%20%E2%80%9Cmini,dump%20the%20heat%2Fmoisture%20outside.
Hi David. A ductless air conditioner is just like a window unit. The advantage of them is you have the flexibility to have multiple units set up in different rooms in your home. You have the option to pick a single, dual, triple, or quad zone unit. David, I read some reviews on them and they were not good.
They attach to the inside wall and blow air inside the roo. You put it close to the ceiling.
