You could paint navy or deep green and it will grow with him. If you don’t want whimsy, line the drawers with his favorite character paper and do novelty knobs. If you don’t wasn’t to paint, clean up and restore. Update the pulls.
Hi Lin! Gray and blacks are great to paint a chest of drawers going into a young mans bedroom! Here is a post on the best black paints for furniture! They require no sanding or priming before!
I stripped a 9 drawer dresser for my client, and stained the drawers in different color stains for a modern look.
I also painted a 9 drawer dresser for a friend and painted the base cabinet black, and then painted each drawer in a different color with black knobs. I used leftover paints including turquoise, purple jam, yellow, hot pink etc. leftover from other projects.
If you want to reno by simiply painting, just select a color he loves and paint away. If the piece is stained already and you want to restain, then you'll need to sand well and apply stain. You can really change the looks of a piece with simple masking tpae and paint. Perhaps a design and add a monogram, perhaps a school or business decal that means something to him. Simple knobs or handles can change up the piece to modernize and masculize it. Have fun!

Hello Lin,
Depends on the young man his age and likes. Or go neutral - two tone grey maybe with simple handles. in gunmetal........
What does he like? Does he have a favorite sport, movie, color? How old is he?
here is an idea:

Changing the knobs/handles is a fast way to liven up an old dresser.
Check out eBay for an array of choices.
