There is a product called Dynatrap. It runs by electricity, attracts bugs with warmth and blue light then sucks them in by vacuum to a container. For indoors or out. Not like the bug zappers that kill with electricity and scatter bugs on the ground.

Check your screens for any openings. Check caulking around doors and windows. Check your door sweeps to keep bugs from coming under exterior doors. I switched to a yellow bulb on my front porch light because the white light bulbs attracted so many bugs. I was recently reading that a sprayed layer of WD40 discourages bugs. I use diatomaceous earth around the interior of the exterior walls and doorways and it's very effective for crawling bugs. Personally, I dislike fly strips, but, they do work for flying bugs. They are super sticky, so put them where you won't walk into them. Limit how long exterior doors are open. Good luck!

If you're having trouble with mosquitoes when you're on an outdoor patio or something like that, I find that citronella candles work well. Also make sure you don't have any standing water in your yard.

I purchased a Dyna Trap device, 1 acres size, 4 years ago. It is still using the original bulb and it does a great job. It's definitely worth the investment of around $150 in my book. It puts off something similar to CO2 to attract them, then sucks them into a compartment with a fan. You dump them out when it's full.

What kinds of bugs do you want to keep away? You're never going to keep them all away, and the blue light ones tend to kill only bugs that are attracted to light, like moths and June bugs, not carbon monoxide, like mosquitoes. I plant things close to the house that deter certain bugs.

    Ceiling Fan or Portable Fans

Fans can be particularly helpful in warding off flies and mosquitoes, neither of which are fans of strong winds.

    Clean Your Gutters

Dirty gutters provide free room and board for pests like mosquitoes, ants and earwigs.

    Strategically Place Citronella Candles

When used at night, citronella candles also provide a light source and create a warmer, more inviting atmosphere for your guests that is not inviting for common pests.

Tuck Tea Bags Under Your Deck

If ants are a major issue every time you try to host an outdoor dinner party on your deck, try tucking mint tea bags around the edge.

    Plant Marigolds

Planting marigolds around the edge of your outdoor living areas can help ward off mosquitoes, as well as other common pests.

    Make Peppermint Cotton Balls

To keep fleas away from your guests, place a few drops of peppermint oil on some cotton balls and place them around the border of your entertaining areas and seating areas.

Repel Pests with Your Fire Pit

This provides the perfect opportunity for some natural pest control, since you can just toss some rosemary or sage on the fire to ward off mosquitoes and other pests.

Replace Natural Grass with Artificial Turf

Fleas and ants love natural grass, but if you take away this comfy environment, you may reduce the pest population in your yard or keep it from growing in the first place.

Natural grass also provides an appealing spot for scarab beetles, such as June bugs and Japanese beetles, that love to lay their eggs in grass lawns.

These eggs then turn into very undesirable grubs that can damage your grass and get into your vegetable garden, which then turn into more beetles to eat your plants, drive your guests crazy and lay more eggs.

What type of bugs do you want to keep out?

Some insects are so small, they are still able to come through 'standard' window screen mesh. You may need to upgrade your window screens with a mesh that is denser and has a tighter weave. It is also important to ensure that any screens are tightly fitted, with no gaps in between the framing and the house.

Keeping bugs out of your house at night or anytime involves lots of prevention. Screens need to be intact-no rips or tears, keep the doors closed as much as possible and plan your in and out traffic to keep exposure down. Check your house for cracks and crevices where bugs can enter and block them with foam.

If you have standing water anywhere near your house you might want to dump that, it is a draw for mosquitoes. Be sure your gutters are cleaned out.

The lights on in the house will also draw insects, especially flying ones. Yellow outside lights will not draw insects as much as a white one.

    Hope this helps you.

Do you have any idea how they're getting in?

  • Hi David - We use this spray in conjunction with our swiffer and in addition to be a great duster spray, it helps to keep spiders and other buggies at a minimum. Hope this helps! Hugs, Holly
