How do you select filter medium?

My guess is that the problem is not dust coming through the ducts but coming in from around the duct work and pulling dust into your living spaces from the attic. Seal the gaps around the duct work where it vents into the room, and you should notice a big difference in your dust levels.

Install vent filters in each vents. These are very inexpensive and simply rinse them out and use them again.

You can get these at the Home Depot, Amazon or I think Wal-Mart carried them before.

You can do some cleaning yourself. Make sure the vents are wiped down and the vents are clean as far as you can see. Change the filter on the return monthly. I had a heating element go out and when we replaced it, they told me we had too many filters. We only needed one on the return in the unit, not on the inside of the house as well.

Mogie has the answer! It is more than likely that is the source of the dust in your home. To start with, what I would do is vacuum the vents with a soft bristle brush to catch any loose dust that may be caught on the vents themselves.

Amazon has Vent Register filters you can buy, they will capture the dust coming from the vents. These are electrostatic vent register filters that will attract particles of dust, dirt, smoke, and pollen from the furnace by way of the furnace filter and registers.

Of course change out your air filter in the furnace every 3 months to eliminate any buildup of particles it can catch, this will help your system work more efficiently. You also might want to check your attic for any rodent infestation, any droppings up there could be drawn into your hvac system and cause health issues.

Also it is not good to put filters in all of your vents, you will be blocking the flow of air.

Nope. You do not want to block any of the individual room vents. You block the air flow and put a strain on the main unit and it will fail sooner. Your main unit should have a filter in it that should be replaced every month. Duct cleaning is a rip off. The only time to have it done is when a major remodel is done and vents were not properly protected.

Don't know how practical it is for you to do, but might be worth a try.!

Good filters at inlet of your heating unit is the best place to have filters.
