Cut a paper pattern of the area you plan to tile. Set the pattern near the work area for the table. Since you only want to tile the center. You can tile the center and use border tile around it. Use tile mastic to adhere the tile then grout. Another way, if you have a router, is measure where you want to place the tile. Route the area out the thickness of the tile. The glue the tile in and grout.

You should be able to use tile adhesive/grout to do this quite simply if your surface is solid. It will look better finished if you gave it a surround such as a picture frame effect! You could always lay Worktop Savers on table when in use if tiles prove not to be suitable! Best wishes.
It depends on the table surface as to the steps you will need to take to adhere the tile. Without adding cement board, you could use something like Power Grab adhesive to place and hold the tile. Then grout and seal. You will need some type of border. You can do metal, wood, or tile.
