I have lots of pine cones in my yard. I decided to make zinna pinecone flowers.

Cutting the pine cones

First cut top of the pine cone. Mine are the long pine cone type. Then, cut the pine cone in half to get 2 flowers.

Prepping the pine cones

I next used White spray paint on both sides of the pinecone, backside first. This is a good base coat so the rest of the paint comes out solid and bright. I did this outside on a cardboard. Let it dry.

Adding the colored paint

I got the colored pack of craft paint several weeks ago at Walmart . I painted several different pine cones different colors backside first. Left them dry.

Drilling into them

I used small drill bit and drilled a small hole carefully while holding my pine cone.

Adding floral wire

I have floral wire and bent it in and slid it into the hole in the pine cone. I then used hot glue around the wire to secure it. Let it dry. Final step applied a paint on varnish I already had to keep the paint finish protected!

Arranged on my table

They are beautiful and can be placed in any containers! They're such a pretty spring alternative to real fresh flowers and they don't need any maintenance.

Suggested materials:
  • White spray paint, Hot glue, craft paints, brushes, floral wires   (Walmart)
  • Floral wire   (Walmart)

I gather pine cones every year and bring them in for arrangements. I guess I have been lucky because I have never had critters in mine. Maybe a bug or 2 but nothing out of the ordinary? Just curious what kind of bug is everyone seeing????? I just pick up dropped comes and i live in Texas where we have LOTS of bugs.

very cute, how did you get them to stand up in the vase? Did you glue a skewer or small dowel to the bottom? Thanks

I use a very hard steel bladed clippers to cut the pinecones. Got it on amazon. After a those pinecones it’s still as sharp as the day I bought it. ARS HP-140DX Multi-Purpose Shears

If ones not careful it will take your finger off.

can cut the center of the cone fairly easy.

These are very pretty. I'd like to try them at Christmas time in shades of white. Thanks for sharing. Did you do anything special for the centers of the flowers?
