Bonnie: I had to resort to rat poison. :-(
Here are some good tips:

If you can, I'd try leaving your hood up. They want to get to the warm engine and a dark place to nest, so if you leave your hood up, they won't be attracted to it. You can also try adding smells that they won't like, such as cat used litter--they won't like the presence of a predator.
Try a couple traps. MIght be the same rat night after night.

Oh my gosh, I would be terrified! I hate rats!
This is a common problem and they have devices specifically to keep rats from under the hood of cars. A friend of mine told me he used this product in the fall of 2019 and it worked like a charm: https://amzn.to/3aigbBT

Rat traps in the area to make it more attractive that your car.
Bonnie....Can you put poison around the car...it would work unless dogs and/or cats are around and unfortunately would work on them too.
Perhaps you can put some rat traps in your garage. We once had a mouse in our garage and a car that was out of service. The mouse ate a lot of the wiring in the car as well as some of the upholstery! We eventually got rid of the mouse (with a trap) - and the car, too.
Also - if you are storing seed in your garage, be sure to remove it! The mouse in my garage was attracted to bird seed I was storing there. I now have to store seed in my home in my laundry room.
