When cleaning silver with aluminum foil, what happens when I use an aluminum pot with the foil and baking soda?

I can't imagine anything bad happening, you could also do a test spot. It would probably clean the aluminum just fine.

You'll probably have a very clean aluminum pot :)

Probably nothing! What's cleaning your silver is a chemical reaction between the aluminum foil and the baking soda. If you line your pan with aluminum foil so that it's cupped like a bowl with no overlapping and then slowly pour in the solution your pan should never even get wet. If your pot is aluminum and the solution touches it it might just get really clean!

Nothing will happen to destroy the pot. Just clean it as normal and it will be very clean for a while.

Sterling silver can be cleaned with baking soda and aluminum. Mixing baking soda, boiling water, and vinegar in a aluminum-lined tray will help remove tarnish from silver. Soak your silver in boiling water for about 30 seconds before polishing it to remove any stains.Dec 19, 2019

If any of the water and baking soda touches the pan tarnish will transfer to the foil and pan. That's why it's suggested to use a glass baking dish, plastic bowl or disposable aluminum baking pan. Sulfur atoms, which adhere to the silver to create silver sulfide – that dark, tarnished look – are carried by the solution and transfer to the aluminum, forming aluminum sulfide and leaving your silver sparkling. Recycle the aluminum foil and you’ve got a waste-free way to polish your silver.

I sell a lot of silver on Ebay. Jewelry, silverware, serving sets. Silver polish like Wrights and dips like TarnX tend to remove some of the metal. The foil method doesn't work that great and still leaves a grey film that still needs to be removed. I use white toothpaste (not gel) and a damp toothbrush. For large items I use a damp cloth. Also works on copper, brass, gold, porcelain, ceramics, sneakers, plastics, etc. For my sales I needed one product for cleaning everything. A dab of toothpaste on a damp toothbrush and gently brush letting it foam up. Rinse and wipe.

Why not just use an old plastic bucket or tub...

    No worries then.

Use a stainless steel pot next time. It cleans up well. You can use a stainless steel scrubber to clean up your aluminum pot. Not the kind that rust like Brillo but a true stainless steel scrubber. It will make you aluminum pot shine again. Amway sells them. They are called Scrub Buds. Works on so many things and last a VERY long time.

Some people are responding and may not understand you are supposed to boil the silver with the foil and soda in a pot on the stove. Pick up a stainless pot at a thrift shop.

  • You need that chemical reaction from the aluminum. If the aluminum pan is clean, you should be fine. If it has any traces of a hard water residue or soap residue, it may not work.

    Hi,

Yes you can but it will probably go black (chemical reaction)!

Hello S, if the pot is unlined aluminum, you should not need the foil, but the reaction should still work, use baking soda in there and try without the foil first to see if the pot's aluminum acts in place of the foil to clean the silver, if not add foil. Hope this helps you!
