Lowe's, and other hardware stores, do carry laminate countertop pieces already cut for bathrooms that are pretty affordable. That may be the easiest solution. Good luck!

Places like Habitat Restore have used vanity tops that are in good to excellent shape for reasonable prices. They also have vanities. Maybe you can find something that will work for you. If you can get to one, if they are open.

If it’s just a couple of inches bigger on each side you don’t need to support it you could cut wood for a new top or Home Depot sells tops all cut then just cut to fit and buy the small piece to cover the side.there like 25 dollers

A small piece of counter top precut from Home Depot is surprisingly affordable. You can secure the new top by using L brackets the screw into the top and the base of the cabinet.

You can make a new countertop by cutting it from wood and covering it with sheet formica. If it is larger, you can buy attractive wood legs at Home Depot to screw onto the bottom of your counter.

If you want to use the one you have you could paint it or even use the stick on tiles to change the appearance - easy and inexpensive too

You could use brackets too. You may need to add a support piece inside your vanity, to screw the brackets into from the outside.

If you have the room to one side add a table or small chest of drawers. If you have to have a join in the top, better to make a tiled or accent top rather than a bad match Best wishes.

As far as making it wider goes, if only want to extend it a little bit you won't need any support, but if you're making it much wider you could use stair balusters to hold up the ends like furniture legs. Whether or not you need to support it depends on how much bigger you want to make it, and what you end up making it out of. We extended a peninsula counter to include a breakfast bar on one side using to sheets of MDF that equaled the thickness of the counter top, then got heavy duty brackets to help support the overhang so it could hold a lot of pressure.
