Hi Pam, some climbing roses or other climbing vines would look lovely going up your porch posts. Maybe Jasmine, if you are in an area it will grow. It smells wonderful too!
That is a huge area. If you want to tackle it a little at a time start adding the taller shrubs at the back and mulch the rest. If you do a rock mulch be sure to first put down some landscape cloth. Otherwise the rocks will work there way down into the soil. You will never get them out and they will make digging nearly impossible. Same for rubber, landscape fabric first.
Beautiful home! I would start with a low evergreen hedge of some sort along the porch and then layer some perennials in front of them. I would choose perennials that flower at different times of the season so you have color from April to October. The hedge will stay green all year and the perennials will come back each year on their own.
you can never plant enuf flowers plant ones native/natural to your area/location,they are easier to care for and draws bees,birds and more and will last forever

Why not contact your local County Extension Agent's office? They will have information about trees, shrubs, and perennials that grow well in your area in both sun and shade. They may even test your soil for you or provide a contact so you can learn what soil amendments may be needed for the plants you eventually select. Some slow growing small pine shrubs would be nice to provide color year round. Depending on where you areand if they would thrive ferns haning from your porch would certainly add to your home's curb appeal. Maybe draw a sketch, make a plan, and after research info revise the plan and start the actual project of purchasing and planting. You have a beautiful home, now it just needs a few more touches.
