I need ideas on what we could do with our awful backyard?

You could have a path of pavers leading to a small seating area. Is that area shady all day?

If it's private enough, you could even have a small food garden there, with lettuces and things that would rather be in some shade.

Maybe a raised bed garden on one or both sides with a path in between? You could put good soil in the beds.

Go to the book store, get a drink, pull one of every Gardening magazine on the rack. Sip your drink, flip the pages, when you see something that speaks to you take a picture of it. Drive or walk around a very nice area take pictures of what speeds to you. Go home look at each picture pull out the things that really stand out to you plan the area you are not happy with keeping those things in mind. Check out thrift stores for garden things, yard sales, estate sales are good also as are the habitat for humanity stores. Yup this takes a while, but so worth it.

You could make a freestanding wooden deck platform and decorate from there! I would close in the entire area with a better looking new fence too! You could do a lot with this space if you are creative! A few chairs and tables, some fence décor, plants! It could look gorgeous!

You have the perfect opportunity to plant a vegetable garden. Any vegetables that you plant should do very well because sand retains water. You would need to till the area before planting. You can use a rototiller or even a pitch fork to loosen up the soil. Once planted, you would need to water it every few days. Without sand you would need to water it every other day.

I would create a nice sitting area with some umbrellas and comfortable chairs

Travis - Hi, we live in Weeki Wachee and we're always outside! How about paint/stain the fence. Shrubs (Japanese Boxwoods) along the border. If you do the fence/ shrubs 1st, you will make the area smaller and go from there. It won't seem so overwheming. Make 'islands' with borders and fill with mulch or rock. Try to use native plants and THEN grass (sod) around islands. We've done this in several problem areas with attractive success!

My first job would be to change the chain link fencing and give the garden a cohesive look. If not possible then I would grow climbing plants up it, and add a trellis to the area at the far left. I would then add a feature plant to the rear fence.

Then strip off all the grass and lay artificial grass at the top end with a feature in centre and a Patio area to the front to chill. Best wishes.

Firstly I would paint the wooden fence with wood preserve. Making it look more presentable. The open fence I would remove and carry on the wooden fence making your boundary private.

I would make a

garden at the end and grass the rest. You want to keep maintenance down.
