How do I update these lights??

Switch out your curly fluorescent bulbs for leds. When we did that I was surprised by how much more light they provided while using less electricity. You could paint the gold trim. In my opinion it dates the lights. A nice black would go with almost everything. A good cleaning always seems to improve everything also.

I would paint the brass black. Replace the fluorescent twist bulbs with LED bulbs at least 800 lumens. Then I would get some stiff translucent plastic and cut discs out to put in the bottom of the lower ring to diffuse the light.

I second painting the brass black. Brass/Gold time is a very dated look, especially with that color of brass and the lines of the light. I also agree with changing out the bulb. I really like the fixture, overall!

You could always replace them with LED fixtures.

Since the glass shows the light bulb, you might go with a “steam punk” look with the retro exposed-filament, unfrosted light bulbs.

Painting the brass will require some prep work to keep it from peeling over the years, but certainly can be done.

Paint with RustOleum Hammered Paint. Change the bulb to an Edison bulb since it is exposed.

I would paint the metal black, you may even be able to remove the glass and spray paint them.

Have you considered putting a medallion on the ceiling?

You could use glass paint or even nail varnish to change the look, Use mod podge to stick fabric or paper to the glass. You could add decor to the ceiling too. Have fun and change the look...............

The easiest would be to spray paint the metal parts and replace the bulb with an Edison type or fancy looking LED.

You can find different metal color paints (Rusteloum makes one) to change to bronze or copper or any color and then rehang it. Also a single bulb or edison type bulb will give it a new appearance!

I agree with others who are suggesting you paint the gold or brass black. You might also consider painting the metal white so the fixture just disappears. You could paint the glass with a translucent glass paint in a color that coordianates with your decor. LED's would be a "bright idea" to provide more light as well as save electricity. This espcially nice in a hallway and entryway.

Hi Molly, I put these in my hallways myself, I and 50 years old, and they are modern looking, I put an LED bulb in them and they look wonderfully clean! and they are inexpensive!

I have that same light. I spray painted the brass Oil Rubbed Bronze and then used an LED light bulb rather than the twisted kind.

I would spray paint them.

Paint the metal! Using spray paint can change the appearance and swap out for a pretty light bulb-- like an Edison bulb!
