What to do? What to do?
Hi folks.
I would like some advice on how to bring this old buffet into this decade. I had always loved it, my mother refinished it about 70 years ago, and she put my name on the back so it was sure to come to me when she passed. It's made from tiger wood and I would like to keep some of the wood finish. I would appreciate any thoughts doing something fairly easy.
Thanks
Janna

Janna: What a pretty piece of furniture!!!
I would probably just strip it and then coat with a polyurethane finish of your choice.

Probably the simplest and least invasive thing would be to just switch out the hardware. Go with a metal for a pop of contrast. Save the old knobs, though, just in case you change your mind. I would not paint this gorgeous piece.
The only way to keep the beautiful wood grain is the sand it down, re-stain, and put on a protective top coat. Don't change the design. People like old styles.
I LOVE it just how it is! What about wallpaper or a new wall colour to modernize the room?
I would NOT paint it it is stunning!
Janna...it is beautiful and to be honest l would not touch it other than use a pretty doiley or runner on the top...you truly have a beautiful gift from you mom!
I would paint the case. Leave the top and drawers woodgrain. Change the hardware to metal pulls. I love the elegant look of wood and paint

I love the idea of adding some white paint to it to lighten it up and then leave some parts of it with the original wood. You could also update the drawer pulls on it.
i agree with Tiny shoes. To beautiful to change. Use a pretty dresserscarf. Or put some wallpaper with a glass or plexiglas top. Maybe change knobs but keep originals.
Oh what a beautiful tiger wood piece of furniture, you are so lucky. I would sand and re-stain, change out the hardware to reflect your taste. For color, a runner or a scarf.
You could leave the drawer faces alone and paint the shell a navy blue.
If it were left to me, I would probably only change out the drawer pulls to something that is metal or crystal.
If you want to have the option to go back to the original at any time, I'd try just changing out the drawer pulls/hardware. You could also add a glass top and decoupage something interesting-looking on the underside of the glass. That would give the top a new look, but you could always take it off if you want to return to the original look. I love the way it looks now, by the way, so I wouldn't do anything permanent or hard to undo.
Ok so there is a stain on it you could sand it down to natural wood and just varnish it and new knobs or milk paint .or just leave it and add new knobs .
I am in the same boat. I have two tiger wood pieces and I hate to cover them with paint but I love painted furniture much more than the tiger wood.
That is some seriously expensive wood and if the piece is more than 70 years old, I personally would not do anything to it, you’ll destroy any value.
It would be a crime to paint that wood if it is in good shape. Add a bright fabric table runner. You could also use fabric or paper to line inside it, but don't glue it so it will be easy to change
Hello Janna,
Have thought to CHANGE THE COLOUR OF THE KNOBS or completely change them for new design. Maybe colour the framework and knobs to a darker shade to make the veneer pop! Best wishes...........
