The Sunflower Table

I believe that there was a period time when every home in America had one of these leather top tables. In fact, I still have one that belonged to my parents. They typically had a very dark wood. Maybe that was to make the leather, with its decorative detail, stand out a little more.

I found this one at a yard sale. The leather was in good shape, but the rest of the table, not so much.

I use Dixie Belle Paint Company products because typically there's no sanding or priming required. However, the finish was so uneven that I broke out the sander and evened it up.

Some dark woods, such as mahogany, will have a bleed through of the tanins in the wood, creating discoloration in the paint. Dixie Belle's BOSS will prevent this and avoid problems down the road. So, in anticipation of bleed through, I gave the table 2 coats of BOSS before I started to paint.

I waited overnight and painted the table, except for the leather, with the color Rebel Yellow.

I wanted the paint colors to compliment the leather so I added some Colonel Mustard. I did a blending technique working from the lightest color in the center, out to the darkest color.

Then I added the color, Chocolate, using the same blending technique.

I added Van Dyke Brown glaze to accentuate the detail.

I paint the glaze on heavy, then wipe away with a damp rag, allowing the glaze to rest in the recessed areas.

The colors reminded me of sunflowers so I added a few from the Sunflower Fields transfer from re*design with Prima. They're so easy to use. You just rub them on.

I cut them in half with my paper cutter so they would line up nicely around the edge of the table.

From dark to bright! This table required a little extra attention, but it was worth it to give it new life.
