How can I get the smell of cigarette out of varnished wood dressers?

Charlotte....I would sprinkle powder in the drawers then put tissue paper over it and close up for a few days.

We broke it down the best we could... put it in big black trash bags with boxes and boxes of baking soda (the frig kind) and left it for months. It really did help.

I figured... in the worst case, I would have to strip and refinish.

I always put things outside for several days and then put a bowl of coffee grounds, fresh ones, not used, in each drawer to draw the smell. It can take a few days. If all else fails I spray a seal on the drawers, but the smell usually goes away

Try other suggestions first. Coating surfaces with poly should block the smell. Worst case scenario is to sand and refinish the piece.

Try cleaning it inside and out with pine-sol and water. The smell is most likely soaked in to the unvarnished areas the most so take the drawers out and clean every surface. Let it fully dry before you put it back together. Pine-sol smell is strong you may want to oppen a window and use a mask.. also just the regular Pine-sol it will work the best don't get any fancy smelling one's.

OdoBan is fantastic for removing cigarette odors. Clean all surfaces with it and you shouldn't have any more issues.

Try rubbing tea bags and leaving coffee grounds in the drawers for several days. Also try a rub down with vengar and Dawn.

How to Eliminate Odors in Wood

Your best hope for sealing in any odors is shellac. It makes an excellent barrier coat over all wood species, and it sticks to almost anything. Zinsser makes a great product for this purpose, called Bullseye SealCoat. It’s a clear dewaxed shellac that you can apply to those drawer interiors easily with a brush. It dries quickly and should help to diminish mice, mildew, musty, smoke, urine smell. And since it doesn’t contain wax, you can apply other finishes like lacquer or varnish over it — they’ll stick just fine. SealCoat is also handy to have around the shop as a general purpose wood finish and sanding sealer. So, I’m sure you’ll find other uses for what’s left of the quart you buy.

Try washing it with a strong disinfectant like FLORA and dry well or use Charcoal to draw it out. Best wishes.
