Hi Kim the paint will still work and look fine but without any protection Chalk paint will be very hard to clean if not sealed properly and, it could also be stained easily then as well.

Chalk paint that is not sealed with a wax or a poly will scratch easily and absorb wet or oily things that are placed on it, especially oily things. It will not clean well. It won't wear well or look nice if you do not seal it. If you use Dixie Bell Chalk Mineral Paint it does not have to be sealed but it does have to cure for at least 30 days before you should use any item you paint.

It will flake off if not sealed. And if you use wax it has to be rewaxed once a year. Do not use chalk paint on kitchen cabinets, it attracts grease and dust. General Finishes makes a good sealant.

Get a good acrylic paint, either at Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore. Behr Marquee isn't bad it is nice and thick. Most important thing about painting cabinets is the prep work. Clean well with TSP or KrudKutter. Rinse well. Lightly sand, prime, and paint. Diane at In My Own Style has a great tutorial on painting cabinets. https://inmyownstyle.com/diy-kitchen-makeover.html If you have a sprayer, use it, if not use a good purdy roller. You do not want brush marks. Remember to label everything. Let me know if I can help further. Good Luck, this is not a hard job, but tedious and takes many days.

Hi Kim, Most chalk paint brands say you can choose to leave it unsealed too, but I don't recommend it. Chalk paint is very porous and will pick up stains and look a mess in no time if you don't seal it with something. So basically, your choice, but consider that it could look stained over time.

  • I think it comes off pretty easily. If it's on an item that doesn't get handled or wear and tear at all, it would probably be ok.
