How can I save my 5 year old plum tree from some thing that is turning the branches black and looks like a fungus but is real,real hard. It's killing my beautiful mini plum tree that is so beautiful.

Hi Nancy, so sorry you are having problems with your plum tree. Hope this information helps. Stay well. Cut well-past the galls, four to eight inches, to ensure all the infection and its spores are removed. Larger branches with established knots should be removed entirely. Use a pruning knife or chisel to remove galls on trunks and large branches, cutting down to the wood and out to at least an inch beyond the infection.

My brother's is doing the same thing. It is a tree fungus. Prune all of the black off and hope it comes back. His gets a ton of plums each year even with the black fungus but they fall off before they ripen. Trim it back hard. You may have to wait two years for it to make a comeback.

I would highly suggest contacting your cooperative extension. These offices are manned by volunteer master gardeners on site there waiting to answer the communities questions that know your local situation quite well.
Master gardeners are required to volunteer back designated hours ( plus continuing education) each year to maintain MG certification -this community outreach and education is their goal.
If your local office is closed you might try an email or Ask An Expert online post. I have had my problems and questions answered this way.
I agree with the comment about checking with your Cooperative Extension. Our offices are closed right now, but you should be able to reach out via email, since most of the agents are working from home. Good luck!
Use a spray of olive oil, liquid soap and water.mix well. Put in clean spray bottle and spray leaves including underneath leaves and trunk with it. It is work but sound like you love the tree so would be well worth it.
