How to Give a Tree Branch a Whole New Look for Your Garden
I can’t just resist making things colourful and patterned and this fallen tree branch is no exception!
I saw something similar in a garden decor page online and thought why not give It a go.
I use paint pens as they give better control and come in a range of colours. I find them less messy than acrylics and brushes however of course you could still get good results if you choose this method.
I like to use the black and white pens to do a simple pattern or highlight onto the colour block. A simple row of lines rectangles or dots etc gives texture and interest and becomes a totem pole look.
I try to choose colours that compliment each other and I evenly space them up the stick.
I find it so therapeutic and joyful to slowly paint a little each day to build it up to a whole gorgeous branch of colourful delight.
As the branches fork outwards I love how the intensity of colour and pattern bring it to life.
I take the painted branch out to the garden to spray a protective clear coating to weather proof it.
At last is a finished project and I’m so delighted with the result!

I really, really like your painted branch. It’s nice that you worked on your branch a little each day. It reminds me of the days when people worked on crafts like cross stitch or puzzles after dinner.

When I first looked at the picture, I thought it was crocheted or some other sort of needle work, which would also be very cool. I love that you used paint pens...easy AND beautiful!

Hi Susan! Love this idea. Did you use a fine point marker or a broad point?
i looked the resource suggestions on Amazon but didn’t see any broad points.
I love your idea!! It adds so much colour to your garden! Do you think it would be easier for me to spray paint a stick
white as a base coat, if I were using colourful pens? Or if someone wanted block colours, say like a black base coat and chalk paint pens for designs? What I’m trying to get out of my half-brain is, do you think some kind of base coat would ‘take’ the colouring pens more easily? Thx in advance! Btw. I just saw an avid crocheter on You Tube who went on a New York subway and crocheted stockings for all the poles! They were premade and she just had to stitch them up. Your designs made me think of it.
I like the mannequins
This is great. I will be doing this for my flower garden and yard art. I have a Styrofoam head. I was going to turn it into a planter, but if I seal it would it be able to stay outside this summer? Also what should I seal it with?
