Chalk paint is a great choice because it usually requires the least amount of prep. You can also use latex paint. Be sure to clean the secretary well, and if it's a dark color, you may want to prime to prevent bleed-through.

Chalk paint with minimal prep or Primer and acrylic latex paint. Three coats of a water based poly to seal
I have used regular interior paint and metallic paint. First, decide the type of finish and effect you want. Then you can let that guide you in your paint choice.
Hello Kathy,
I think I would use a chalk paint and seal with an antique wax to tone down the chalky look and give a sheen. Best wishes.
You can use chalk paint with a chalk paint top coat or you can Prime and paint it with oil based paint or spray paint it. Depends on your capabilities. Just remember prep is key, even with chalk paint.
Ive used chalk paint on several old pieces and have been very pleased with how it turned out. Good luck!
Depending what you want, You can use a semi gloss paint or restain it.

It depends on the finish your looking for if you want a chalky look then use milk paint a China finish then minwax and pick the color and stain it and sand
Chalk paint is very easy to work with especially if you are a beginner.
I'd recommend using a good bonding primer, HERE is my favorite. It goes on smooth and is water clean up. It will assure you that the paint finish sticks to the table top. Then 2 coats of good quality latex paint, in a satin finish.
