Faux Wood Beam Installation

There has been a wood beam in our dining room/living room which has bothered me since we moved in. Our inspector had said it’s probably there to cover a seam since our house is pre-fabricated.

The color of the wood has always bothered me because it was too orange, but it was “okay” with our paint color “Perfect Greige" by Sherwin Williams.

But then last year I painted our walls a lighter "Seashell Gray" by Valspar and the orange of the wood was too much.

I decided I would try to white wash it, but the stain was just seeping through and I ended up painting the entire beam white…7 coats later.

With it painted I still didn't like it either. I felt it was too small and looked like it was trying to hide something and not really making an impact like a wood beam should.

Then I found Ornamental Moulding and Millwork. They have beautiful

(affiliate link) faux wood beams and looked like they were very easy to install. I partnered with them to replace my current beam and I am so excited with how it turned out.

Remove the Previous Beam

I removed the beam that was there and just like the inspector said it was covering a seam in the ceiling. Which I was thankful for I didn't find something else!

Ornamental Faux wood beams come in two parts. The wood that attaches to the ceiling and the beam itself.

I screwed in the wood to the joists and then cut the beams.

The beams come in 8' lengths and our opening was just over. So I received two beams cut them evenly and put the seam in the center.

Attached the beam to the wood

I then slipped the beam over the wood and screwed it into the predrilled holes. It stayed perfectly.

Add brackets

I added three brackets. One on each side and one in the middle to cover the seam.

The beam turned out better than I expected.

It looks like it has always been there as well as making an impact in the room.

I had never seen such an easy to understand cut of the inner construction of the beam. I get it totally how it's done. I'm wondering one thing though: are the support brackets really necessary to the solidity of the beam or are they purely decorative?
