How can I choose the best cat-safe mulch for azaleas?
I've cleared a 6x18 foot bed in front of my porch, and plan to plant a line of encore azaleas. I know my cat will be spending a lot of time investigating them.

Is your worry that your cat will eat the mulch? I’ve never heard of that before.
Rocks/stones are the safest for animals.
Use a commercial cat and dog repellent sprayed directly onto the mulch. Pine-sol or other strong smelling cleaner can also help keep cats away. You will have to reapply it after a rain. It does work. It certainly kept my dogs out of the mulch and from eating the mulch. I could always tell when the smell/taste was wearing off because they would sneak into the mulch to grab a bite! I would spray again and they didn't bother it for a few weeks if it stayed dry. You can find the commercial spray in any garden section in any box store. I usually only use one spray bottle a year and I spray a fairly large area around the perimeter of my house.
Is it for cat safety or to prevent them from using it as a litter box? Different suggestions there.
Pine needles works real well and I don't believe a cat would get into them
Use all natural without dyes and you should be fine.

Hi Teri,
Shredded Bark would be a good one. Comes in colours too.
