Hi Denise, when I painted my laminated table I lightly hand sanded it with fine grit paper and then used an oil based paint to get the best possible adhesion that I could. It worked out great!

If you are thinking of painting laminated furniture you want to clean it well, sand lightly with a fine grit sandpaper or sanding block, clean it well again to remove all sanding dust and then use a primer. Using a primer is the key to having the rest of your paint stay on. You can choose to use a chalk paint after the primer or an acrylic latex paint--a paint made specifically for cabinets is a good choice because it is formulated to be durable and washable. I have found that when painting over laminate it is a good idea to let your paint both dry and cure well before you put it back into normal use. The longer drying and curing time you can give your project the less chance you have of scratching any paint off accidentally. It may feel dry to the touch but the paint is nor cured until it has reached it's final hardness. Curing in many instances takes up to 30 days. If you are using chalk paint you do want to finish your piece with wax or a poly. If you choose to poly use a water based polyacrylic for a non yellowing finish especially over white paint.

I took off all the hardware (not to look like an amateur job.). Then I merely cleaned with Windex, primed with Kils and then put two coats of a good latex paint!

Lightly sand with 220 grit sandpaper to remove any gloss. Prime with Kilz primer. Then paint your color. Seal with three coats of a water based polyurethane to protect the finish.

Hi!. Clean it well, first. I am always amazed at the grime trapped in a clean looking finish! Then, you want to sand lightly, to just get the surface finish to a point sealer and paint adhere. For that job, I use a sand sponge like you can pick up at the dollar store or any hardware store. Go with the grain. You will be dulling the finish. Then take a damp, not wet microfiber cloth (or any clean cloth) and wipe off the dust from sanding. When it's completely clean and dry apply your sealer. I like Kilz. Places like Home Depot will tint it to a color to ease the transition to a dark color if you want to save paint. White works well for lighter colors. Once it is dry, paint! A clear, water-based sealer will protect your hard work. Good luck and stay well!

You can use primer to start then any semi gloss paint.

I would use a chalky paint. Rough up the surface with sandpaper then use a chalk paint. You could also use a primer first.

Scuff with steel wool, clean with denatured alcohol, prime, and paint.

If it's laminate, chalk paint is the best. Chalk paint requires very minimal prep work. If you do decide to sand, be very careful. Sanding laminate can be tricky and cause more damage.
