How to start a planter?

The soil goes in first. The weed block goes on top of the soil. Cut slits or "X's" in the weed block where you want to plant. Then add two to three inches of mulch. Putting the weed block on the bottom can block root growth on your plants and you'd get weeds growing on top.

Hi Valerie, that's a great idea. Get a small roll of landscape fabric, and put that on the entire bottom. That stuff allows water to seep through but weeds can't grow through it.

Then yes you're right, potting soil and then plant your plants! Will that planter get full sun? Or maybe some shade?

You will have lots of colourful choices of flowers to choose from Valerie. Do you already have some ideas for your plant choices? And how tall or short you want the plants?

If you choose a few perennials for the planter, they will come back every year. Then you could fill in the rest with colourful annuals.

If it's big, put something in the bottom like milk jugs or big rocks. This will take up space so you need less soil - soil is expensive! Add rocks to the bottom for good drainage and then top with soil. The lawn fabric isn't necessary.

Great advice from everyone! I like to put the taller plants in the back so the smaller ones show nicer. Now is a great time to start seeds if you are growing them. I would have to grow indoors, here in Pennsylvania until about mid May, since it's still too cold. Good luck and stay safe!

Landscape fabric is great for stopping the weeds I’ve also used old newspaper in several flower beds it soaks up water which helps the plants. It also blocks the weeds and becomes biodegradable after time. Top that with some fresh soil add in some nice perennial plants for low maintenance and finish off with a mulch.

That would be a good plan. Except I would amend the current soil with garden soil, then put down the landscape fabric, cut a hole for each flower you are planting. Keep in mine you will still have weeds because seeds are carried by birds, insects, and the wind but this will lessen them.

Yes pick pretty flowers get some ivy put it hanging out of both ends and maybe tall plants for back

Put rocks back in to help with drainage. Use garden soil and Compost mixed together to fill Planter then off you go. Plant as you wish.
