Painting Deck?
My deck is made of mismatched plastic boards. They are various shades of blue and purple. They appear to be made of recycled plastic. The previous homeowner had covered them with an outdoor carpet. However, we are surrounded by large pine trees and carpet is not practical. We would like to paint the surface of the deck to give it a more cohesive look. Does anyone have experience with this? What paint should we use?

Visit your local stand alone paint store for the best advice for your project and area. The are far more knowledgeable than the big box store temp help. They will also carry the products you need and tell you how to apply and prep.

Do you get snow or does the temp drop below freezing where you live?
This is one factor that will effect how paint may not adhere to the plastic.
Whatever you do I would get the best deck paint there is and spend the extra money!!!! You will want whatever deck paint line comes out of Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams and get the TOP grade! I know of 2 people where they used deck paint off the shelf from local Home Depot or Lowes and it started peeling within the year. You will want the best. Go to your nearest Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore dealers.

Do you know if your deck is constructed out of composite decking material?
How do you know that the boards are made from recycled plastic? Did the previous owners pass on to you any information (such as invoice, etc.) about when the deck was installed or by whom?
Genuine composite decking such as Trex or Timberland brands is expensive. Because of this, I can't see anyone covering it with outdoor carpet.
If your deck boards are not a genuine brand, I doubt if Rustoleum spray paint would hold up over the winter due to the snow.
I have painted vinyl siding with success. However, since you will be walking on these it may take a sealer to prevent peeling. I would consult a paint specialist at a good hardware or paint store. This sounds like a very specific paint requirement.
