What kind of paint did you use? Did you water it down and use fabric medium, too?

There are a lot of tutorials out there, and some are better than others! I've read about using acrylic paint, fabric medium, and water, but I just looked it up, and, as you said, you can use just chalk paint and water. I wonder if you need a little more water, though, if it's coming out hard. You could also try steaming it with an iron or a clothes steamer--I've found that that helps to set the color when I dye things and also "loosens" the fabric a little bit, making it softer. The fabric may just be stiffer now, too.

Not really. Once it's hardened it will always be. All you can do at this point is use it as is and hope it softens up.

you tube site SUITE PIECES shows how to paint fabric, then sand lightly and it makes it very nice and soft, not like wet dry hard leather like you would think....good luck take your time I would first try on something you were not concerned about... 4-27-20

What type paint did you use?

I painted our furniture with chalky paint then used wax on it in the end. I believe it was the wax that softened it. If you are using a paint with latex in it like regular house paint then it will be hard to soften.

Use chalk paint with 2 coats of wax.

  • You could try wax but paint is paint and when on fabric, it hardens or makes it much stiffer. You’re likely out of luck. Fabric paint is a better option.
