If you have a blank wall on your patio or porch, I have a great solution for you. This easy DIY modern trellis adds both art and a place for plants to grow. Here’s how to do it using cedar fence posts and boards.

Step One - Cut down the Cedar boards to 1" pieces.

Using a Table saw, we cut down the fence boards into 1" pieces and the posts into 2" x 2" pieces.

Step 2 - Create the Frame

Our frame dimensions were 3' x 5'. We cut the cedar 2x2 boards into 2 5' lengths and the top and bottom to 32" to form the 3x5 rectangle. We used pocket holes and wood glue to attach the frame pieces.

Step 3 - Screw the pieces together.

Screw the pieces together with pocket hole screws. We used extra long clamps to hold the pieces together. Nice to do, but not completely needed.

Step 4 - Attach center support

Attach a cedar 2x2 in the middle using pocket holes again. Our center support was 56".

Step 5. Create the diamond pattern

Next, we took the 1" Cedar pieces and created a center diamond pattern. All of pieces were cut at 45" degree angles to they formed the diamond. It is okay if you pieces don't line up on the edges, we will fix that in a later step. Secure all pieces with a nail gun and trim nails.

Step 7 - Continue making the diamond pattern.

We spaced ours 6" apart.

Step 8 - working towards the center

Because the center diamond did not have the frame edges to support it, we reinforced the corners with brackets. It make it more secure.

Step 9 - The Center piece

For the centerpiece, we used two right triangles cut from cedar boards to form the diamond. Maintaining the 6" spacing between diamonds.

Step 10 - clean up the edges

Use a jig saw to clean up the edges of the frame. This saved us so much time and measuring.

Step 11 - stain

I used a spray gun and black stain to finish the piece. Any color paint or stain could work. Could also paint or stain your pieces before assembling if you don't have a sprayer

The final product!

In it's happy new home

We added some hanging pots and vines to our trellis. I can't wait to see it fill in.

Could the height of this trellis be lengthened to 7' or 8' and still look as this shorter version?
