Antiquing a Mirror?
Hi I was wondering if anyone has tried to take the backing off of Home Depot
Mirror squares 12 X 12. I am having the hardest time getting the gray/silver coating
off of the back of the mirrors. I have been using citrisrip stripper.leave it on to long it strips gray and orange. Not on long enough and nothing comes off.
Does anyone have any suggestions??
Thank you
Mary
You could try using lemon essential oil
This might help. It involves white vinegar and black spray paint.

That's the silvering that makes glass a mirror. If you remove it all you'll have is messed up glass. Why not just start with clear glass? Small stand alone hardware stores that do window repair will cut you glass any size you need.
Try using a streight edge razor try paint stripper do small sections out side use gloves
I agree with Kelli. It's a pain to remove the gray paint, copper coating, and silvering. Best to buy clear glass. If you still want to try here you go

It's a lot of work to remove the silvering backing on a mirror, it would be easier to get a piece of glass from a dollar store picture or a second hand store picture.
Hi Mary: Try this. It worked for me: To remove the silver coating from the back of a mirror after the grey or black paint has been removed, pour Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner that contains BLEACH (green bottle), let set for a few minutes until the liquid cleaner turns darker or bluish then rinse with water. Good luck
Hi Betsy
Thank you so much for your suggestion. I will give it a try.

It seems to me this will take more effort than it’s worth as it’s not really meant to come off. Start with clear glass and work your project forward.
