One of my project managers asked what I kept in my tool boxes so I organized them to make a solid list of essentials. Here is what I keep in my electrical toolbox for DIY projects around the house. I've rewired half my house already with these essential tools. If you have other tools that I don't have in the video- I'd love to hear what your suggestions are so I can add them to the list.

Over the years I have aggregated lots of electrical and other tools. Unfortunately, after many of the projects not all of the tools made it back to the correct toolboxes so I decided to organize them and share the essential tools that I use for my projects.

Tool box/ tote details

I used these Husky totes for my electrical tools because I had an extra one already and it has worked well for several years. This one is just the right size for all of the electrical tools that I use. I use a slightly larger ones for my general construction tools. I keep ALL of my electrical tools in this tote and have containers for the electrical supplies for easy access depending on the project. If I were to buy a new toolbox for electrical I would consider this one instead. The one in the picture was pretty affordable at around $15 at The Home Depot.

Voltage and Outlet tester

This tool is very handy due to its dual purpose. On one end I can test outlets to see if they are "hot" or at least wired properly. On the other end I can test wires to see if they are "hot" before working on them. I always test on a wire that I know if hot just to make sure it is working before I test the wire that I am about to work on.

I got mine at Home Depot. I got a standard grade version, however you can always upgrade to the pro version it you like. This one has worked fine for several years and has saved me to getting electrocuted.

Multifunction needle-nose pliers

Out of all of the tools in my electrical toolbox, these are my favorite. They are very useful for working on outlets or wiring boxed. The needle-nose are handy for bending Copper wires. There is a gauged wire stripper that I use to prep the wires as well. This tool can cut, bend and strip the wires saving you the headache of having to use 3 different tools for the same project.

If I had to start all over again- I would get this version since it has a little more utility, however the one that I have will have to work until I need to upgrade years from now.

My second favorite electrical tool

If the pliers were my favorite, this tool is a very close second. This screwdriver is a must have for installing outlets, switches and their respective plates. This driver bits are interchangeable so you can handle both Phillips and flat head screws.

This is the one that I use- make sure you get the one with the changeable tips otherwise you have to buy several of them.

Cable tester

This tool has saved me lots of headaches when it come to Coax cables for TV's. I had a problem with a cable that I ran and I could not tell it is was the box, tv, or the cable so I bought this device to test the cable. There are 2 parts to it- one sends a signal on one end of the cable and there is a speaker on the other end that lets you know if a signal is going through.
