Hi! What type of hem, and what type of tips? In general, I pin a hem in place before sewing. That way I keep it even. There are also clips you can use if you don't like pins.

You are going to want the hem to lay flat without lots of extra, bunched up fabric.

A hem stitch is a simple stitch. Keep in mind you are going to be sewing on the hidden or "wrong" side and the other side, the "right" side will show the length and size of your stitches. A thread close to the color of your fabric helps minimize them. I never have thread over 12 inches on the needle (doubled length) when sewing a hem, because I can manage it without tangling the thread, while keeping an even tension. If you pull your thread too much, it will pucker the stitches. Another method involves iron on adhesive. It sells under names like Stitch witchery. I haven't found it as washable as hemming by sewing, but, it's a quick fix. Hemming is like any other skill. Time and practice gives you the best results. Mending loose hems and seams will give you confidence and practice. My granddaughter sews at nine, because she practiced threading needles, sewing small areas, sewing buttons, etc. until she developed the eye hand coordination and patience it takes to work on her own projects. It depends on what you’re hemming. There are no sew options but I find pinning and ironing before sewing makes a clean hem.
