I imagine you could find the replacement string quite easily on Amazon or at a craft store then you would just weave it through.

The string is fishing wire. You should be able to restring.

Any string that doesn't stretch much could be used. I actually would used fishing line. It's made not to stretch when reeling in a fish. Just cut a little longer than the length you need. Work on one side first of the dowel. Weave the balls and attach to the other side dowel kepping the balls level.

Hell, you can get some fine fishing line and restring the balls. Here is a video to build a new one
