How to hang a single piece of glass 9x12, in a window,

I have prism window film that I want to put in my window. If I put it on a piece of glass, instead of on the window, I can move it if I want. I tried with only the top if an acrylic frame but do not know how to drill a hole in the top to hang without cracking it. Can anyone help me with this idea? My grandkids love the rainbows all over the room when the sun hits this just right. A cheap and easy way to add a bit of magic. . The pictures here are just to show my test backing, glass and acrylic and how the rainbows look. I did not want a frame on the actual glass, but can' 't figure out how to hang it in the window. Maybe with the acrylic I can ..figure out something> Any ideas welcome.

Hi there, I'm wondering if command hooks might work for you? How heavy is the acrylic?

Hi! You could frame it... and then hang on a chain

Can you superglue heavy clear fishing line along the side edges with a loop over the top to hang? This would only work with the acrylic piece.

Use a drill bit meant for plastic. Drill tiny holes in the corner and use fishing line to hang anywhere you want to...

Or use command hooks upside down and then string with chains or fishing line.

You can drill the acrylic but not the glass. Use a piece of masking tape where you want to drill the hole and lay the acrylic on a block of wood and drill your holes. Remove the tape after drilling.

Drill holes in the top and hang with metal wires, chains or fishing line.

Hi Rr. , I do stained glass and might be able to help you especially when it comes to hanging glass.

First of all I have a couple of questions about it. I am confused by what you mean by acrylic? Are you referring to the window film when you say that or are you talking about putting the window film on plexiglass instead of a glass piece. Or are you talking about an acrylic frame of some sort that you tried hanging the film? If you could clarify that would be great.

If you want to make easy holes to hang with fishing line:

You can do this if you get a piece of plexiglass. Put the film on that, because that will give the stability and rigidity that you need for the film and it is clear so the film will still show the beautiful colors through it. HOWEVER, it will not give you the crispness and brightness that you will get with a glass piece. If you are fine with that, this is the easiest way to put holes in. At the top corners, you would drill holes and then you can hang it with rope, chain, heavy fishing line right from the plexiglass.

If you want to use real glass:

OK now glass is not as easy to drill holes in. You need a glass bit or grinder of some sort with a coolant and water. This gets very tricky especially if you aren't skilled at it. I would not do this at all and on top of it, hanging with fishing line would not be strong enough.

If you are positive you want glass:

Good news though, You can add your film to the piece of glass and hang it but you will need a frame. I know you didn't want to do that but that is the way glass is hung especially because you don't want it shattering on the ground.

    - They have stained glass wood frames or frame kits for glass that you can buy (extremely expensive). They are more expensive because they aren't like a regular frame. There is a pocket to allow the glass to slide into so that you can see it from the other side.

-You can make a metal frame yourself pretty easy. This is probably the more minimalist look you will want and it's cheap. It doesn't take anything away from the glass piece. The frame is only like .5 of an inch in width.(maybe a little more but its minimal) You will have to do some soldering though. You will have to get zinc from a stained glass store and mitre cut it. When you apply it to the glass on all 4 sides, you will have to solder the corners. Then you will solder hooks to the top 2 corners. You will want to hang it with a metal chain.

So there you go...those are your options with glass.

    Another option to think about:

If you can find a way to flatten the film, (Maybe cut it to size and let it sit out in the sun on a very very hot day with heavy heavy books on top), maybe you can just just get a plastic poster frame to go around it to add the needed weight to keep it from rolling up. Then you could easily hang it with fishing line. That might be a thought. You might have to beef up the edges of the film so that the frame will be able to go around it without falling off. Maybe like a puffy double sided tape just on all 4 sides to allow the poster frame. Normally posters have cardboard underneath so it fits nicely. So puffy double sided tape might work well. GOOD LUCK!! This sounds like a fun project!
